I inherited a novel called Swivelhead by Miriam when I took the jump from Penguin to Knopf Canada, after trying to have acquired it for Penguin. All credit for the acquisition to Noelle Zitzer who valiantly fought the powers-that-be in making the case that Miriam was an author who belonged at Vintage. I took Miriam’s brilliant prose, shaped and edited it. It was when I came across a sentence in the novel, “There is a kindness in this town, but it’s a complicated kindness” that I found what would become its title. If I am honest, finding suitable, marketable, catchy titles is one of my superpowers. The novel had an initial printing of 4000 copies. Thanks to the delightful Adrienne Phillips, publicist and co-conspirator of my dreams, the book was successfully launched into the world. There are now over a million copies in print. I will ride Miriam’s coattails forever. I went on to acquire The Flying Troutmans and Irma Voth. The latter is probably Miriam’s least read novel, and in my opinion, her best. Well, it is a Sophie’s Choice, because I love them all so much, but at St Peter’s gate, when asked the question, that will be my final answer.
